Obey the Laws of the Road
When riding a motorcycle, always follow traffic laws to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Doing so can also help you avoid legal trouble. In addition, good riding habits contribute to a more pleasant and enjoyable driving experience on the road for everyone.
Check Your Blind Spots
Just like the rest of the drivers on the road, motorcyclists have blind spots, too! Side mirrors on a motorcycle tend to be even smaller than the ones on other vehicles. Be especially cautious anytime you're changing direction or speed. Use your turn signal each and every time you change lanes or turn. Scan the area for cars/pedestrians/obstacles by turning your head slightly to the left or right.
Use the 4-Second Rule
The 4-second rule is a motorcycle safety guideline for maintaining a safe following distance during a ride. Choose a fixed point ahead of you. Start counting as soon as the vehicle in front of you passes it. At "one thousand four," you should be passing the same fixed point. Slow down to increase the distance between you, if needed. This gives you more time to react if a driver makes a sudden move or doesn't see you.
Drive Defensively
You can be the best driver in the world – but it won't prevent an accident if bad drivers are out there with you. Practice defensive driving by being aware of your surroundings at all times and anticipating the actions of other drivers. This will help you react quickly and help to safely avoid potential hazards.
Don't Imbibe and Ride
Drinking, drugs, and other distractions can impair your judgment, decision-making, and the ability to take action. Diminished motor skills and reduced reaction times can make it difficult for you to control your motorcycle and respond quickly to avoid unexpected situations. Alcohol is a significant factor in a large percentage of motorcycle crashes. If you add to this the costs and possible jail time associated with being caught driving under the influence, you'll quickly realize it's just not worth the risk.
Keep Your License Current
Don't ride without a valid motorcycle license. Motorcycle safety courses are often required. There are a number of training courses available, including those offered by the Florida Department of Transportation's Ride Smart Florida program.
